Tech25 Launches Gear Labs Free After-School Creative Program for Pittsburgh Area Teens
Posted 02/11/26
Tech25, a live event production nonprofit and workforce training center, is proud to announce the launch of Gear Labs, a free after-school creative technology program for teens ages 15 and up. The program begins March 17th, 2026 and will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM throughout the school year at Tech25’s training facility in Mt. Oliver.
Gear Labs is designed as a creative technology playground where teens can explore music production, DJing, lighting design, and live event production through hands-on learning. The program is free to attend, requires no prior experience, and provides students with access to professional-grade equipment and software.
Unlike traditional classroom-style instruction, Gear Labs focuses on experiential learning. Students build real-world skills by setting up sound systems, producing beats, mixing on DJ decks, programming lighting, and developing creative technical projects. Weekly focus labs and mentorship from Tech25’s working industry professionals help students build confidence and career awareness in a supportive, project-based environment.
Director of Operations Steve Smith, who has led instruction across multiple Tech25 youth programs, expressed strong enthusiasm for the launch of Gear Labs. “The best part about teaching young people is seeing their incredible energy and how quickly they learn from each other. I love introducing them to pro gear, helping them get started, and turning them loose to play. From there, they naturally learn new skills in a way that feels fun and exciting to them.”
Participation is free and requires advance registration. Registration is accepted on a rolling basis throughout the school year.
